Interpreting the Qur'an and the Bible
We are delighted to announce a new course taught in collaboration with the Maqasid Institute

Part 1 (2 credit hours): Hermeneutical Methodologies for Interpreting the Qur’an: From the Classical Islamic Period to the Contemporary Context

 

Spring 2025, Saturdays 3-5 p.m. Mecca time 

Course leader:  Dr Motaz Al-Thaher

This course will be hosted by the Maqasid Insitute and will be taught in two blocks of four sessions each:​​

 

1. "Qur'anic Exegesis: Classical Approaches" 

   - Dates: January 22, February 1, 5, and 8, 2025  

 

2. "Qur'anic Exegesis: Contemporary Approaches"  

   - Dates: April 12, 19, 26, and May 3, 2025

Part 2 (2 credit hours):  Biblical Interpretation in Islamic Context

Saturdays 0800-1000 Houston time

Course leader:  Dr Ida Glaser

This course will be hosted by CMCS Houston in two blocks of four sessions each in Fall 2025.  Students may choose to do one block or both blocks.

Part 1:  Reading the Bible in the context of Muslim questions

What is the Bible?  

How can human writings be considered divine?

Why don't Christians use the original languages? 

What is the method for interpreting the Bible?  

Dates:  Sept 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 2025

 

Part 2:  The Bible and the Qur’an

Reading the Bible alongside the Qur’an:  comparative reading

Reading the Bible alongside the Qur’an:  interpreting the Bible

Reading the Bible in order to understand the Qur'an:  a Muslim perspective 

Reading the Bible in order to understand the Qur'an:  a Christian perspective

Dates:  Nov 1, 8, 15, 22, 2025

Students who wish to obtain CMCS Houston credit for this course are required to complete the first four modules of our 'Research and Writing for Muslim & Christian Studies​' prior to the start of the course.   This course may be begun at any time - students are advised to begin as soon as possible.

​

The course cost is $300 (or $75 per block), reduced to $100 (or $25 per block) for auditing and majority world students.
