The first 2 credit hours of this 3 credit hour course are a pre-requisite for students wishing to take any other CMCS Houston course for credit. THE FIRST FIVE MODULES MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU BEGIN THE COURSE FOR WHICH YOU WANT CREDIT. Modules 6 and 7 will help you to produce your first assessed essay.
The first two modules will also be required study for most non-credit students.
The course is currently free of charge!
To apply, send us an email telling us about your education to date and explaining why you want to do this course. You also need to give us the names, status and contact details of two referees who will recommend you for admission to the course.
This course is designed to take you step by step through some of the skills and thought-patterns that you need to develop in order to do rigorous academic research and writing.
It begins with the important area of learning how to cite your sources and to write in your own words and without plagiarism. You will then learnt to think carefully and critically about what you are reading, to think about and search for primary and secondary sources, and to assess and classify your material. The next three modules will take you step-by-step through writing reflection assignments and then an essay. The final three modules take you to skills which are particularly important for studies on the Muslim-Christian interface.
YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO GIVE AT LEAST 42 HOURS TO YOUR STUDY AND WRITING FOR EACH CREDIT HOUR OF THIS COURSE.
This course is designed for students wishing to study at master's or final year undergraduate level. It is also open to other students who wish to develop their research and writing skills.
